you also could introduce a "Flag this thread for reading later" function like they have on Webmasterworld.
Works quite well and saves a lot of time.
Function should be for registered users only.

Lynn's forum feed works well for what you are trying to accomplish. I have it saved to "my yahoo" and am always able to see the latest posts that way.
Another thing that I have found useful that Lynn already seems to devote a lot of time to is the weekly announcement that she sends out that highlight the most popular threads of the week.
