Newbie here needing SMO advice!

Postby herfooty » Sat Dec 06, 2008 3:38 am

Hi guys and gals,

Firstly, I would like to congratulate you on your site, it's a fantastic resource for anyone looking to expand their knowledge base regarding online business and all other related topics.

I am in the very early stages of starting up my own web based business and I was looking for advice regarding using blogs and other social networking pages to promote my site. Am I better using a page or starting an ad on Facebook?

Does anyone have any preference as to the best site to use when starting my blog? Is blogger.com a good option or are their better ones out there?

I have many questions and I am very new to all of this, any advice or help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Nat @ herfooty.

Promoting blog

Postby website_seo » Sat Dec 06, 2008 5:47 am

The best way to promote blog is to host on your own domain.

Use yourdomain.com/blog and add some useful posts.

Once you posted 5-10 useful posts, submit them regularly to various social bookmarking sites listed at http://blog.seohawk.com/social-bookmarking-and-seo/

It will surely help you :P

Dont invest your time and energy into a blog which is controlled by wordpress or blogger.com ( Just for precauation )

I agree that hosting a Wordpress blog on your own domain is the best way to build a business, but it may be very confusing when you're new to it.

Perhaps you'd like to cut your teeth in blogging by using Blogger or Wordress.com. Maybe use them for things related to hobbies or other interests. Get to know the feel of how it all works.

Don't build a blog on Wordpress.com with affiliate links. It isn't allowed.

I don't know anything about ads on Facebook, but I recommend Facebook as another way of building traffic to your blog and getting to know people in your fields of interest.

Act on your dream!

Really Nat more info needed to give you good advice

:-)

But yes you need your own hosting account and domain name

And when Lynn re opens her "Elite Group" join it! You will get personal advice from a super affiliate - and that is rare Nat.

Putting article on Blogger and otehr free sites is OK for "Bum Marketing" but it is not a real business

Hope that helps - keep the questions coming

I agree, hosting your own WordPress blog is best if it's going to be a business blog.

As far as social bookmarking your own site, this is generally frowned upon. While the rare, occasional bookmarking of your own site is "ok", it is not recommended that you do so on a regular basis. Just provide quality social bookmark-worthy content and let your site visitors do the social bookmarking for you.

It's also good to put your site link in your profile on various social networking sites, in your forum signatures. Another good way to get site exposure is to visit related blogs in your niche and to be an active commenter on those blogs offering valuable information and contribution to blog posts - of course including your blog URL when replying. ;) Just make sure you're offering valuable information, not just comment spam to get a link.

If you are not already, I would use Facebook as well for building visibility. Some great ways you can do that:

--Start a group
--Join and participate in others' groups
--Import your blog posts using the Notes application
--Invite others to your events
--Personalize friend requests
--Create a page for your business (separate from your personal profile)

You could do Social Ads which are very targeted, but if you are newer in business, start with trying some of the free methods as listed above.

Hope that helps. :)

Christine,
Great tips for Facebook. I only joined to see a friend's pictures and am now only using it for personal stuff BUT I see where it would be beneficial to use it for business at some point too. I'll keep all those cool tips in mind. Thanks.

I highly recommend Facebook as well and also Twitter
Another thing to do is to put follow me on Twitter and add me on Facebook badges on your blog and website. I get tons of new friends and followers this way.
