Good question, Phil! Yes, they work fine I actually design my own templates, and also design them for clients, and then use them to build the website...

Have you seen ? It's one of my favorites for quality of design... if I were going to buy instead of designing my own. Definitely an affordable alternative to hiring a designer!

I'm going to agree with Lynn - templates do work. In fact that is how most designers work (they design a template for the site) and then add the content). the main difference between buying a template and having a designer is that the designer makes it especially for you.

A couple of notes on templates: you will need to know some basic html to make them work and customize them. Plus some of them will come with style reference for the formating of the content while others leave that completely up to you (of course you can change any of the styles for your own look). And being a tepmalet - someone else can also get that same on, so I would do a little of customization to it - just to make yours unique.
