go to your hosting control panel, look for the section that automatically installs software for you.

you should find OSCommerce there and maybe others as well.

This is one of the best, if not the best, shopping cart software out there and it is free.

You use whatever database your host provides and/or that the software requires.

SEO considerations remain the same, no matter what type of site you have. How you implement it may differ.

I don't see what difference the software makes to setting up an affiliate program.
But that depends on what you are talking about.

Robert I am not sure what are the questions I should be asking when considering setting up an ecommerce site, but this a must to draw up a list of questions to ask one self and a ecommerce web developer and hosting provider.

1) SEO is a big factor and ease of it when you are dealing with a merchant that provides a feed of their products not sure what kind of feed this is called but this allows to update your products on the fly through the merchant, now if you are dealing with several hundred products it can be a daunting task I imagine to do basic seo with meta tags etccc heard there is a way that some of this basic stuff can be done automatically not sure how yet

2) is the program open source code and how well is it supported by programmers that are able to modify the program and customize it as needs change this is another factor that this is possible

3) What platforms and database should one be considering from the jump in the event one has to switch hosting companies and now it could become a major headache due to not selecting the right software and platform that would allow the greatest flexibility if one has move to another hosting provider

4) What are the web development and technical questions concerning software platforms that we should be asking ecommerce web developers and hosting providers.

Robert there are some custom programming that will be needed at some point, so will this software allow for this to happen easily and who and where are these people that can do this job.

For now robert the objective is to compile a good list of questions that everyone should be asking to oneself and others who will be involved in the development of the project.
