How do you check?

I have been learning html as I go and I am writing a 3 column site map for my web site and was wondering how I can check it to see if it works without going through the work of putting it on my site just to find out I did something wrong. Is there any free programs that I can copy and paste and it will find errors?

You could try NetMechanic (http://www.netmechanic.com) - you'd have to upload the page live for it to check it though.
There is also HTML Tidy (http://sourceforge.net/projects/tidy).
