Postby CHOSEN » Thu Jul 03, 2008 9:30 am

World Diabetes day is celebrated every year on November 14.The date commemorates the birth day of Frederic Banting, who along with Charles Best, credited with the discovery of Insulin in 1921.

In the 2007, the president of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Proffessor Pirrre Lefebre in a statement said that over a fifty year period, diabetes has become a global problem devastating human, social and economic impact.

The total number of people living with diabetes is increasing by more than 7 million per year.If nothing is done, the global epidemic will affect over 350 million people within a generation.Unchecked, diabetes threatens to overwhelm healthcare services in many Countries and undermine the gains of economic advancement in the developing world.

In almost every Country of the world, diabetes is on the rise. The curent number of people with diabetes stands at over 230 million. The disease is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, amputation, heart attack and stroke. It is one of the most significant causes of death.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where in human body does not produce or properly uses insulin, a hormone that is required to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy

rohni are you type 1 or type 2? My husband is type 1 and the only way to control his diabetes was with the Mini Med insulin pump. Yes they are expensive but if you have insurance you should be able to get the majority of that covered by the insurance company. Since on the pump he does not have any more wicked highs to lows and his sugars stay well under control.

Thought this maybe could help you.

People please be careful of any company that promotes a cure for diseases such as heart, cancer, diabetes most of this stuff is herbal based and unproven to really have any benefit. If you are on medications for heart or blood pressure mixing herbal stuff with it could very well render those meds useless so be very very careful.

Here is something that may be of interest to you.

Yoga More Effective Than Other Forms of Exercise in Treating Diabetes

There are more and more people looking into natural therapies to help with diabetes. I think so many people becoming insulin resistant is a big reason.

You will find several articles on the Natural News site that might help.

look into high fructose corn syrup.

I personally think it is a little like what the tobacco companies were doing with the nicotine.

every thing that you buy has high fructose corn syrup in it and usually as one of the top ingredients.

I put on 20 pounds a couple of years ago. I was drinking about 10 or 12 dr. peppers a day while sitting at the computer all day.

My blood sugar was over 700 when I checked it.

I stopped drinking dr. peppers, changed nothing else, and two days later my blood sugar had dropped 200 points and two days later another 200 points.

I started paying attention to my diet and started reading product lables. I took the high fructose corn syrup out of my diet and lost those 20 pounds in just a couple of months.

NO exercise, no other diet changes, just removed the high fructose corn syrup.

Now, look at the obesity rate and the increase in diabetes in children over the last 30 years. Guess what one product has had the largest increase in sales in that time.

You guessed it. Soft drinks.

We have a whole generation of obese adults that grew up drinking soft drinks all day long.

Since they started replacing the real sugar with the high fructose corn syrup in almost all products, this has been happening.

Just my two cents worth on this issue.

Eating right has a lot to do with it. However there are some people that that end up with it for no reason at all. There are ways to help it though.

Type 2 diabetics can be helped simply through adding cinnamon to the diet each day, it helps the body to naturally absorb the extra sugars. Just a teaspoon a day can greatly help your body to absorb those extra sugars. No this is not a cure, or a claim of a cure , it is something that helps the body regulate some that is it. You still must follow all your doctors recommendations for controlling your diabetes, and never allow anyone to talk you into abandoning medical treatment for a promise of a cure. Diabetes cannot be cured, but it is very manageable.

Thanks Karyn for the cinnamon tip. Anything that can help me keep my sugar levels down is helpful. I am taking pills now and don't want to have to graduate to needles.

The timing on this thread. Less than a month ago, I found out I was diabetic. I was pretty sick for a couple weeks, no appetite, constant dry mouth, very dry, blurry vision, ect. Finally got myself to the doctor and sure enough. I tested at about 430, so could have been worst.

They put me on some pills (can't even pronounce it), and I felt so much better in no time. After a week or two I was running about 100 or so, guess I was lucky. Sure feel for those that have to take insulin.

It wasn't really a total shock, as my dad has been diabetic for some time along with several relatives. Though I did drink alot of mountain dew, as some have mentioned, soda is not good, well the sugar.

The day I found out, I was pretty bummed. After that I actually turned it more positive. It gave me a very good reason to eat better, always a good thing. I have also been exercising, another good thing.

I even lost some weight being sick before and many of the clothes that did not fit me before, fit perfectly. Not like it's the best way to loss weight, but a positive from what should be a negative situation. Or I am just odd :)

Some good information in this thread though, as I know I am still trying to figure it all out.
