They get almost all their new traffic through 1 or more of these 3 activities:
1) Directory Listings - if you knew which relevant directories your top competitors put a link to their website in, you could also list in those hotspot directories. You could start by going for the free high-traffic listings first, and after you get some sales from those, you could simply expand to using paid high-traffic directories also. Directory listings are a great way to make cash... but you have to know which ones your top competitors make their sales from.
2) Google AdWords - this isn't a nerve-wrecking, wallet-busting activity IF you know the exact AdWords your top competitors use successfully, for high traffic at low cost. If you know which AdWords make them money... and which keywords they use to make their AdWords work, then you could model those AdWords yourself. This way you start off with a very high degree of confidence, knowing that the AdWords you're adopting for your own website are already working best for your top competitors. So this is a powerful, optional income stream that you can get to when you get some sales from the free directories you listed in, in #1 above.
3) Keyword Density (by webpage) - you may or may not know that Google looks at two things to get you to the front page as far as keyword density goes: it looks at your keyword density (you'd never guess, eh?), and it also looks at the number of other websites linking to you (inbound links). If your website is listed in lots of high-traffic directories (those are definitely inbound links), which very few of your competitors do correctly anyway, then it's just a matter of getting past the keyword density pitfalls. You CAN be on the front page of a lot of high-traffic keywords! You start, as we suggested, with directories... get that going. Then compare your 'wording' on your webpages to your competitors (start with the main page for each website). The tighter your wording compared to your competitors, the faster you hit the front page for those words/phrases.
