It might happen that search engines stop counting forum posts when determining pagerank (if they haven't already), but the advantage in having a decent forum history is that you can build up a reputation in a community and when they really get to know who you are and maybe even value or trust your opinion you can start pushing your products. You get a community that knows and trusts you a bit, and then you get them to know your products. It could work, but it isn't likely to make for really big sales.
