Yahoo Groups - Great for newbies to generate lots of traffic

One thing that I noticed about Yahoo groups is that the larger groups often require you to subscribe which really is not that big of a deal. But because you need to subscribe first versus open groups, this means that the moderators are trying to control the group for their niche. They also have the ability to filter posts first.

What this means is that they really don't want others coming in to intrude on their existing niche.

Good point - some of the moderators of large groups don't want you to intrude on their niche...but here is the key - if you can add value, then they will want to include you...so add value and then network with them...you can learn alot about the niche and then grow yourself...there is abundance to go around!
