It depends where you're advertising and also how you're writing your ad. Have you checked the subscriber numbers in the places you've advertised - it will make a big difference if the subscribers are targetted and double opt in rather than single opt in and perhaps not so targetted.
Personally, I prefer PPC campaigns as they give me a little more control, but ads can work well if you do a little research and match the right ad to the right audience.
