Internet Marketing, An observation
by Wyatt M. Portendt
Is legitimate, internet, and marketing in the same sentence
sort of a contradiction in terms in today's world?
I always thought banner ads were annoying, but legitimate as long as
they didn't hide the entire page. I think everything since then has
been a scam and a scourge of the online community.
Think of it this way. If you get junk mail in your mailbox, you can
just throw it away. Annoying, but not a problem. Now, what if someone
broke into your house to place the junk mail there. Most would be up in
arms. Enter adware and spyware. Now, what if someone called you on the
phone day or night hundreds or thousands of times to advertise to you in
your home? Think netsend. Now, what if they snuck into your house,
placed the junk mail inside it, rigged it with a siren and flashing
lights, and if you tried to disable it, the room they placed it in
either wouldn't work or would be destroyed. Think again, spyware/adware,
flash and popups.
Internet marketing has become invasive, intrusive, unethical, obnoxious,
and generally gone past the point of being a pain to the point of being
downright wrong. If the same tactics were tried for conventional
advertising, we'd be up in arms and would run these #*(%(^*$(@#(@ out of
town on a rail.
