I agree with Patty. In fact, when I look at my site stats, I see these types of search terms being used:
(actual examples from April 2004 stats)
public domain ebook make money
new product pricing strategy
reselling "informational products" without website
how to join internet marketing for free
how many times a word is searched
free online product marketing tips
how do you get rid of the alexa toolbar
spam filter check ezines free
expired domain names drive targeted web traffic
etc etc yada yada - you get the picture
The forum is very productive at generating relevant content and creating pages that rank highly for specific or targeted search terms. Within a website that is very general (internet business, web marketing, make money online) and in a highly competitive industry - you reach the niches with individual categories and pages.
On the other hand - and what I believe you were referring to - you can create smaller highly-focused sites on specific niche markets. I can see this being a profitable model also, and have heard a lot of enthusiastic talk about this lately. I look forward to hearing what others have read, or tried, or just thoughts on the topic in general.
