all a subdomain is , is a alias that redirects to a directory of the same name in the root ( public_html on servers that use this)

You can submit that to their support, but I don't think it will change.

Cpanel main upside is that it makes things easy on newbies or people who don't want to learn too much about webmastering.

I think the way they have created is more user friendly than anything else. If they did it the way you suggest, then the administrator has to take an extra step of clicking on the domain and the clicking on the sub domain to get his files.

The cpanel is set up your subdomains are presented on the same level as your root, which save a webmaster an extra step (although I will admit it is a small step.)

I've spent hours banging my head against a wall trying to figure out what Hostgator does. FINALLY, someone was able to help me.

Ah, now I get it. The Cpanel is supposed to make it easy, which is always harder when you're used to doing stuff at the command line. I find the interface a lot more confusing than the 'hard' way.

At least that explains why they do it.
