What I don't understand is how can somebody spam through their profile if they don't post?

From my understanding, the robots.txt will not stop them from signing up. Spammers robots won't follow the robots.txt suggestion. It only prevents that page from being counted on the SE's. While that's the primary advantage for the spammers (showing as a backlink), I don't think their automated eyes are gonna even blink as they spam you anyway.
What works:
Use a random image confirmation word during the signup process. For now, the spammers can't fully automate that.
