It's been a long time since I've played with phpBB but I remember it being very easy to use and customize.

If I were you I'd just jump in and get it installed.
Get the latest version.

There are TONS of great tutorials/how-to articles on the net about installing and using phpBB but I'd certainly start here:
http://www.phpbb.com/support/

Check out the functional and cosmetic add-ons you can get here

I'd go stable.
I'd rather have fewer headaches and stability than a few cool features and have to spend a lot of time with it.

Eventually they'll probably have some sort of upgrade available I would assume.

... ONE CATCH TO THE ABOVE...

If the 3.0 is largely updates in security... then you may want to just wait until it's stable. Security updates are important.

Hi, you have installed phpbb3 which is not yet a stable release, however, it will soon be stable and you should be fine with it.

It is currently in release candidate version 7 and that will probably be the last version before going final.

NOw, once it goes final, you will be able to run a simple update and you will be fine.

Now, for the moderator approval problem. you will need to go into your admin panel and set the correct permissions for all your forums. There may be a global setting for moderator approval, if so, you will need to turn it off.

The phpbb3 permission system is very extensive and I have not used it much yet, so you will have to experiment with the forum permissions until you get it like you like it.

to replace the logo, simply create your own logo in gif format, that is about the same size as the phpbb logo, then name it exactly like this:
site_logo.gif

then upload it to your server and let it overwrite the one that is there.
it should go here:
http://medais.net/forum/styles/subsilve ... e_logo.gif

for the ads, it depends on where you want them to show.

you can't put google ads in the header or footer because they would show up on search pages and other non-content pages and violate google's terms.

however, you can put them on some of the other pages.
find this file:
http://medais.net/forum/styles/subsilve ... _body.html
open it using your favorite text editor and find this:
<!-- INCLUDE overall_header.html -->

on the next line after it, add your google adsense code.

save the file, upload it back to the server and test.

you can also add your code to the bottom of that file right above this:
<!-- INCLUDE overall_footer.html -->

this should get you started .

if you have other questions, I am here a lot.
