How to promote a forum

For those of you, like Lynn that have a popular forum, how did you get your forum to become popular? What advertising methods did you use?

When I launched this discussion forum, I already had a mailing list - so my first move was to email my subscribers and let them know that the forum was available for open discussion and networking.

Next, I got my forum listed on directories and web pages that listed other popular forums on similar topics.

I changed my signature in the forums that I visited daily at the time, and gained many new members that way. Another forum is a great place to find members for your own, as they obviously enjoy and participate in forums ;)

And last but not least, I optimized my forum so that it would attract new members and visitors from the major search engines.

Hmmm...that link ends up at "There are no topics or posts that meet your search criteria."

As for my forum font, it's great!

What I like best is that new user list function in the admin panel. Zaps those spammers good!!

Nice list Dan. Do users actually visit those directories though?

I imagine those with a PR of 3 or more are being seen by a few folks.

They're not someplace I tend to hang out, though...

One of the most important things that you can do is go in and edit the forum files so that the category and post titles show up in the beginning of the Title Bar, instead of at the end. If you view a thread here at the SSWT Forum, for example, you'll notice that the post title shows up first in the Title Bar (before the name of the forum).

It's also important to use keyword rich post titles whenever you post to your own forum, or as the admin edit post titles that are not very descriptive. This helps other members scan posts more easily, and it also helps in keyword searches.

I also link to individual posts, and to the forum, using keywords in the anchor text where I can. Such as when I refer to them on my blogs or websites. Having an RSS Feed for the forum is a plus, too ;)

How DO you edit phpBB forum files?

Nothing's exactly jumping out at me in my admin panel.

I edit mine via FTP, but you can go in to your File Manager through your host and edit them there too.

Stefani, I think that the viral way is the best way (unless you have ton of money). Ask your first memebers to help you... also ask friends to register and post there so the forum wont look empty... it takes time and I can asure you this is the cheapest way to do it ;)

Dear Terry,

I am very interested in this forum as I am currecly growing an internet marketing forum.

For someone who is just starting out, what do you suggest that I do.

Thank you.

Start with the steps I mentioned in my first response to this thread. Optimize your forum. Get it listed in forum directories. Get active in related forums and run a compelling signature that links to your forum, etc.

You can also do article marketing and all the other steps you would take to promote any type of site. See: http://www.clicknewz.com/633/traffic-ti ... new-sites/
