Another e-book Newbie! Need help on starting an ebook!

I am in the very beginning process of writing an ebook. I know what I am going to write but I am confuse about where to start. Should I just write in the word first and then compile it later using the e-book compiler? Or is there any e-book software creator where I could just fill in the contents in the text box, for exampe? Is the software expensive?
I really a newbie in this ebook thing and I desperately need help on starting this.

Do you already have a "compiler"? If not, I would suggest writing it in Word and then publishing it as a PDF file.

The absolute best resource on the topic is by Fabio Marciano ($27). It will walk you through everything - from concept to completion, and all of the tasks in between such as creating the page layout and having the table of contents created for you automatically, etc.

You can create single text doicument and go for .pdf format.

or Create multiple htm pages (like web site and linking together from left navigational menu) and create a book using ebook creator like:

Make sure your ebook is compatible with all platforms and use PDF and HTML formats. I know my Macintosh can create a PDF on the fly without any extra software, I'm not sure about windows. If you really get into it, Adobe has Acrobat where you can add headers, footers, insert items, etc It's been real beneficial in our business but it's pretty pricey so if you don't want to spend the money, wait until your first PDF gets some profits rolling in.
