How-To 'Do' Ebooks!!! by Traci Knoppe

Postby lisamariemary » Tue Apr 14, 2009 2:12 pm

Awesome blossom, hold my hand, give me step by step, clear cut directions - how to do this thing called ebooks!!!!!

tknoppe wrote:Writing an ebook is as simple as typing it out in Word or OpenOffice. There are some book templates out there, probably even 'e-book' templates that would set your margins 'just so' for you and all that, but for a downloadable ebook, I've never found it to be a problem to go with the standard settings and just type! You can adjust those later, if needed. If you want them to be able to hole-punch the left side, for example, to put in a binder if they print it, then I'd make the left margin wider, but most don't worry about that.

The key thing for an ebook is to convert it to a PDF file, OpenOffice does that for you, or if you have Adobe, use that - or one of the free printer drivers that will convert it for you (like pdf995).

How you set it up depends on if you're just going to use a PayPal buy-it button or a full blown shopping cart system.

Easy is buy-it button where after payment, they land on a confirmation/thank you page with a link to the product for them to download.

Clear, concise - short and sweet.

Now just go DO IT!!

I feel like you're telling me to finish one of the million ebooks ideas floating around in my mind. Traci definitely has a way of motivating us to just get things done! Thank you both for the little nudge ;)

love it, Ladies:

I am so close to the finish line! A little action, camera, and GO! Finishing up an 'ebook' /report today. I'm doing a free version first, but thanks for putting that tip about the buy it now button. I am seeing that I can easily add value to create a paid version.

best for now,
Mary

I started using open office because I found the free print driver I was using did not make the links clickable even though I had made them hyperlinks.
Not sure if that is common but after 20 ebooks, reports, and tutorials written I have come to be inseparable with my open office.

"Just do it!" has been my moto from the very beginning.

Yes it is common! I actually posted about this very problem in another thread here on the forum!! But the short answer is yes: OpenOffice will make your full hyperlinks clickable, as well as any embedded links within images or in text like this. ;)
