Ebooks need to have ebook covers attached to them...

It may not be necessary, but the cover
is the very first thing the potential customer
will see.
Even if it is a give-away, with-out a cover,
there is no "Zing".

You can market and sell and ebook without a cover...but it certainly makes it more appealing with one.

Edwin, I'm curious why you're asking the question.
Are you having trouble finding/making a good cover?
An easy solution is to search Flickr's Creative Common licensed pictures for something that matches your topic, use the picture, and add the Title, Subtitle's, Author, Etc., overlayed on the picture, and make it the first page of your document.
If that's not your concern, I'd love to hear what generated your question.
