Another idea:

Buy a product via direct mail in the niche you're interested in.
Pretty soon, you'll be getting direct mail letters from all over the
place. Pay attention to which letters you get more than once.
Chances are, they're profitable.

Wouldn't that be because you've internalized the best through practice and experience? A newbie coming out of the gate won't have that level of intuition to be able to rely on his (or her) guts to guide them.
