Google Adword Keyword Disabled .09 CTR

Postby James J Jones » Tue May 11, 2004 11:26 am

Why would a keyword that is getting .09 CTR be disabled? There is no content tracking so that is not an issue (all impressions come from Google)

Anybody else had a problem with this?

I got the answer to this in yesterday's interview with Perry Marshall ;)

Within your Campaign Settings, you'll see Content Network (Adsense) and Search Network (AOL, AskJeeves, Earthlink, etc). You can uncheck Search Network so that your ads show on Google ONLY.

The interesting thing, especially when split-testing ads, is that new ads are displayed on Google immediately... while it may take up to a week for them to show on the Search Network (partner sites) - - so if you are split testing two ads, the new ad will not show similar results right away. In this case, you should either turn off syndication to the Search Network, or turn off Google's ad optimization feature (as they will automatically show the original ad more often - not giving the new ad a decent opportunity to compete).

Hope that helps!

Very thorough explanation from Google

Postby pschlegel » Tue Jun 01, 2004 2:46 pm

A long and helpful answer from Google.
I had keywords with tremendous clickthrough rates that they
slowed.

Here its is:

Hello Paul,

Thank you for your email. I understand that you would like to know whether it is OK to re-use slowed keywords in the same Ad Group. If the keyword was marked 'slowed' than it was not performing well. Please note that if you are currently running ads on Google.com and on sites in our search and content networks, the CTR you'll see in your account reports represents the combined average CTR across the various ad network channels. The 0.5% minimum clickthrough rate (CTR) requirement considers your keyword performance on the Google search engine alone. This ensures that all ads are evaluated on the same criteria.

Our CTR technology ensures that your keywords are given every opportunity to perform well per the matching options you have selected. With this technology, CTR isn't the only performance consideration, so there is no exact cut-off point. Our system automatically assesses a match's degree of relevance by analyzing Google search queries, your ad text, keywords, and CTR.

If the CTR for your account falls below the minimum required CTR after
1,000 ad impressions are delivered on Google, we may mark those poorly
performing keywords as 'slowed.' To give you the opportunity to improve
your ads' performance, they'll show only occasionally when users search on marked keywords. Once you refine your keywords and optimize your
campaigns, please re-enable your account by clicking the 'Restore Full
Delivery' button near the top of your 'Campaign Management' page.

Please note that if your campaign performance improves while delivery has been slowed, full delivery may resume automatically, and you will not see the 'Restore Full Delivery' button. If your campaigns continue to perform poorly we will slow delivery to your account again to give you more time to re-edit your keywords and advertisements.

Unless you refine your ads and these keywords, the keywords will be marked as 'disabled' and your ads will stop showing for these keywords
altogether.

It is possible to re-use 'slowed' keywords in the same Ad Group. However,
if you re-use a poorly performing keyword, you may notice that it is
disabled before reaching 1,000 impressions. This is because our system
recognizes that this word has not performed well for you in the past.
Therefore, our system is more rigorous in its evaluation of that keyword.

If you would like to use the same keywords in the same Ad Groups, we
recommend that you re-enter them as exact matches, so that they will only show for highly relevant searches.

Please read the campaign optimization tips listed below and visit the URL
below for more tips on improving your CTR:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To refine your keywords and ad text and to improve your campaign
performance, follow the steps below:
1. Use multiword, specific keywords to remove singular and/or general
keywords. You can use our Keyword Suggestion Tool to refine your keywords
at: http://adwords.google.com/select/tools.html
2. Create new Ad Groups specifically containing your targeted keywords in
your ad headlines or text.
3. Use keyword matching options to help weed out irrelevant searches. For
ideas on negative keywords, look at the irrelevant results from our
Keyword Suggestion Tool as negative keywords. To learn more, visit:
https://adwords.google.com/support/bin/ ... nswer=6100
4. Use descriptive and specific ad text to highlight the relevancy of your
ad.
5. Delete poorly performing ads with low clickthrough rates (CTRs) to
improve the CTR for your keywords and campaign.
6. Use keywords in your ad text to attract users to your ad. Plus, if a
user searches on a keyword that appears in your ad, the word will appear
in bold.
additional questions or concerns.
We look forward to providing you with the most effective advertising
available.
Sincerely,
Greg
Subject: Optimizing Campaigns
I am doing a major optimization of my
Google Adwords campaigns.
I've noticed several keywords that were
getting high clickthrough rates and were
converting well for me that Google Adwords
slowed down.
I've temporarily deleted them. Is it OK
to introduce them back into the same adgroup
where they were performing well or is it
better to set up an entirely different
adgroup for them?
Thanks.
Paul
