What do you think of RSS autopost blogs?

Postby terrapin719 » Fri Apr 17, 2009 12:34 pm

I'm not talking about blogs that are setup as basic spam to leech adsense earnings, those just make you feel icky. But, the concept I guess is really the same, a blog that automatically posts from a set of RSS feeds, whether they be news feeds, affiliate data feeds, etc...

They can be somewhat unpersonal, which feels anti-blog to me, but they certainly serve some purpose. Especially in the case of affiliate data feeds being used.

What are your thoughts? Do you use any auto-posting services? Have you considered it? Anyone that has experiences to share would be helpful as well.

They can serve some purpose, so they're not all bad. I put together a 'scraper' for a blog network; we pull all the posts from the network and post the excerpts on one blog. It serves as kind of a 'central clearing house' for network posts.

Well I guess the first thought that comes to my mind is what content is it and WHOSE content is it, and is it duplicate content.

If it's my blog, with my name on the front door, er - header, or on the About page or whatever, then it's my reputation on the line as to what is being posted. If there are posts on there that I have absolutely no clue what it said - because it was posted automatically from an RSS feed & I haven't even read it - then it could spell trouble.

Even if you check each one before posting, it still could be duplicate content from elsewhere and won't be written in my 'voice' with my thoughts, opinions, recommendations or expertise.

So no - I don't use them. :)

I agree that is a really useful way to use an autoposting feed system.

That depends on if you believe in the mythical duplicate content rule.

Interesting thoughts so far.

I believe in having my content be unique, and it wouldn't be if it was first duplicated on dozens of others sites across the web, and second - not even written by me at all. ;)

That is very true! Getting scraped is pretty unpleasant when you haven't been asked first. Especially if it's by a spammy type of scraper and not a friendly RSS excerpt on a relevant page.
