Upgrading to new WP version

Hi Angie,
I've created a manual which may be of help. It steps you through creating a back up of your previous WP files before continuing.

In case you're on dial up or don't feel like going through a video, here are the steps you can take:

1. Download the and unzip the files.

2. Back up your original WP files/MySQL DB. (You can use FTP and phpMyAdmin.)

3. This step is important: Log into your WP admin panel, then deactivate all plugins that are activated and reset the theme to the default.

4. Upload the new WP files excluding the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ folder, making sure to overwrite the previous WP files.

5. Navigate to the /wp-content/themes/ folder on your computer and on your server, then upload the /wp-content/themes/default and classic folders to your new site.

6. Run the upgrade script (i.e. yoursite.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php). When you receive the confirmation message, you're done.

7. Log back into your WP account and reactivate all the plugins/theme you were using prior to the upgrade and double check to make sure there are no conflicts.

Sorry I missed your recent reply, Angie.

It's been a long time since I've used fantastico to do an upgrade, but I never had problems using it after making some changes. Of course, my usual prerequisites with upgrades done in any fashion is to make a backup and deactivate plugins.

Hopefully, you've worked it out by now.

There is also a plugin that automatically upgrades WP to the latest version...at first this plugin had some issues, but for my last two upgrades it worked well.

fantastico updates can be problematic at times.

depending on the script, it may simply wipe out whatever you have and replace it all with new.

I would be sure to make backups of all files and the databases before running any kind of update/upgrade, but especially if letting fantastico do it.

you should always keep up to date backups of everything on your server. hosts often help you out by updating things without telling you in advance.

Yeah, the cool thing about the plugin I mentioned above, is it does create backups of everything...but always make your own.
