If you're using the latest version of the plugin, you must configure those options under Plugins -> Related Posts Options in your WP admin panel.

Also forget to mention that if you want it to appear in list format, you'll also need to put <ul> before the <?php related_posts(); ?> code and </ul> after it. Then set up the <li> and </li> in the options.
