Use of More

Postby Mommyland » Fri Nov 02, 2007 6:41 pm

I was wondering if its a good idea to use the more/break option with blogs or have the whole post shown on the page. I have seen both but not sure which is better or is it a personal preference?

I have multiple posts displayed on the main page of my blog at www.clicknewz.com , so I use the more option so it just displays excerpts. I do this because I blog several times a day, and want people to be able to scan the newest posts.

I'd say it would depend on how often you publish new posts, and how your blog is laid out.

I've seen other blogs have a static main page. I do at CorkItUp.com, but it is an "affiliate site" using WordPress as a content management system - not a "blog"...

Remember that using the more tag has an effect not only on what your home page displays, but also what your feed readers see. Where a visitor would have to click Read More.... (or whatever your more tag says) so would a feed reader. Using it in just the right spot is a good way to get feed readers to click in and visit and see things they might not otherwise see, like a cool ad in your sidebar for something they've been looking for, or your new theme, or anything really. Using the tag too soon in a post without catching their interest first might cause them to click away and not think about your site or take it out of their reader.

The Wordpress site has some great tips on using . It takes a bit of editing but it can be handy depending on how you want your blog to display posts.
