How does blogging help a site to sell or get better search engine rankings?

Although I have a relatively lively forum ... I still think that having a blog offers additional benefits.
Aside from being search engine friendly, additional traffic arrives via ...
- high traffic blog directories that list your blog.
- RSS feed resources that list your blog feeds.
Once you're in the aforementioned databases ... your blog will generally be updated on a regular basis.
At this time, I'm using http://www.Blogger.com (free hosting and blog creation), http://www.Feedburner.com (makes the rss feed reader friendly, and provides detailed stats ... as well as a browser friendly, viewable version of your updates), and http://www.pingomatic.com (to ping the major blog databases).
