Wordpress Sidebar stretch problem - help!

I added some advertising which all looks good on the main page but it stretches out the sidebar on the about, article directory and other pages so that the main text is not being displayed on the first page viewed. I thought that making the about page longer (putting more text) would fix this but I found that it didn't
Can anyone help me rectify this problem so that the ads display on normal sidebar on my pages?
