Setting up a new blog

This is a timely thread as I was going to ask whether there are any significant differences between choosing say Typepad (via Six Apart say) and Wordpress.

I am particularly keen to know about hosting possibilities for either of these, as well as important functionalities that allow for future flexibility as a blog develops its "own" personality.

I wouldn't want to go down the route where you have to have a subdomain of the host, such as xyz.blogspot.com or abc.typepad.com.
Is there any way around that restriction?

Wordpress is free and currently the more popular option - which means there are tons of guides, templates, plugins and tutorials available all around the 'net (a big plus in my book!).

Most hosting accounts have an option to install Wordpress directly, which makes it super easy to set up. You can get hosting cheap (under $10/mo) and point your own domain to it, avoiding the subdomain hosted issue you mentioned above.
