R: Advice required on building a list

Hi,
Can someone give some advice?

I'm thinking of offering free ebooks on different subjects to people and would like to build a list. Can you tell me if it's possible to use the same opt-in web page to build a list of people interested in receiving ebooks? I can't really afford a paid autoresponder membership at the present. So, I was thinking of using the free one at getresponse for now to build a list of email addresses.

I'm thinking of creating an opt-in web page where people are directed to in the article resource box or signature. When they sign up, they get an email that provides a link to a web page that promotes all the different ebooks. They can then click on the ebook that interests them. In return they are taken to a web page that provides a link to download the ebook of their choice.

Or is there an easier way of doing this? Perhaps I shouldn't build a list to start with and only offer ebooks with links inside to the sign-up page?
