Reading Rate of Your Newsletters

Postby alice » Sun Mar 21, 2004 11:37 am

What's a good reading rate for a newsletter....or if you aren't sure what's good, would you mind sharing yours? I'm interested in knowing the percentage of subscribers open newsletters.

Thanks,
Alice

I also gave something for free (a gift basket every month) when I first started building my list: and my list grew really fast.

Also, in order for them to qualify for the free basket I asked their feedback about the website, and the responses I got from that were invaluable. My website is what it is today becasue I asked for feedback.

But, as my list gew, my open rate decreased: from almost 50% to 40, then 35, and eventually to 23%.

That's when I decided to stop offering the free basket, and soon after that, I moved my list form Constant Contact (which charged me $25/month), to DADA mail (free): I lost 90% of my subscribers in the process (like Alice, I asked them to resubscribe, and this time it was double opt-in), but this time, I know they are really interested in reading my newsletter.

I am actuqally making some money when I send my now!

So, I think it depends on what you need your free gift/incentive to do for you.

I feel a bit embarrassed that I didn't know about open rate now

Since this thread I've done some research, and yes, just like your wonderful folks have kindly pointed out, open rate exists and is a vital marketing statistic.

I contacted the owner/developer of , the list management solution I use, and apparently he's working on an open rate add-on that's almost ready.

I love learning new things, thanks all!
