Anatomy Of An Article Submission

Postby tltfaas » Tue Oct 25, 2005 12:44 pm

Writing and submitting articles to publishers in order to promote your business, services and products is a wise choice for any entrepreneur. The only cost for this kind of marketing project is your time and, if you want the maximum benefits, the amount you pay your proofreader/editor.

Many people are overwhelmed by the submission process and don't know where to begin. I have outlined below the ten steps I take with each article submission project. Having a process in place makes organizing submissions so much easier and removes the confusion of where of what to do first.

1. Start by having your article proofread and then add it to your website. Make sure you have a catchy title and a by-line that compels readers to take action.

2. Use a text to html tool to format your by-line so that your URL will appear live when your article is posted on a site. I recommend you use the tool at http://thephantomwriters.com/link-builder.pl

3. Collect the information you'll need for most submission sites including: title, author name, address, phone number, e-mail, website URL, topic, two line summary of the article, word count, line count, article URL, auto responder address (if available), document file names and 10-15 keywords.

4. Make a list of the type of submission sites appropriate for your article. I use EzineAnnouncer to collect and keep track of my submission list and I always write down the categories that are a match for my article. My latest submission qualified for more than 400 sites but your success depends upon your article topic.

5. Begin submitting to sites that accept articles by e-mail. Never send an attachment unless asked. Incorporate the entire article into the e-mail and include an option for the recipient to opt-out of your list.

6. Your next step should be to sign-up for all new submission sites on your list that require registration. Typically, you have to wait for a confirmation e-mail before submitting. You can move on to the next step while you wait.

7. Submit to all sites you have registered for and to all sites not needing registration but offering a submission form.

8. Check your e-mail, confirm your new accounts and visit those sites to add your article. Keep track of your login and password for each site.

9. Update your submission list by removing or correcting bounced e-mail addresses and URL errors. You will also need to add your new submission sites to your list.

10. Create a report to keep on your computer with the name and URL of the sites you used for submission. Update this list when you submit your older articles to newly discovered sites.

Create your own submission process by building on the steps I have provided and you will find your submissions taking less time while helping you to become more organized.

I actually created an article submission template - I'll post it here and under a separate topic, too - for folks who are interested:

Create a simple article template to copy each article you want to
submit to various article submission email lists.

It needs to include the following:

1. General Article Information in the header:

Article Title:
Author Name: Julie Jordan Scott
Contact Email Address: julie@5passions.com
Word Count:
Category:
Copyright Date: 2003

2. Publishing guidelines: this is where you give permission to
publish the article along with any specifications you have in that
regard.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Publishing Guidelines: Thank you for publishing this article in its
entirety including the resource box. When possible, please notify me
of publication by sending either a website link or a copy of your
ezine upon publication via email to julie@5passions.com THANKS!
3. Your Resource Box
Create a simple file (I have one in notepad) with this information
ready to go so when I finish an article I simply copy and paste it
into the document, change any relevant information such as Article
Title, Word Count, etc and its ready to go.
I also keep a Copyright Label and my Name in the document as well.
Here is what it looks like before I modify it with a new article"
Article Title:
Author Name: Julie Jordan Scott
Contact Email Address: julie@5passions.com
Word Count:
Category:
Copyright Date: 2003
Publishing Guidelines: Thank you for publishing this article in its
When I plug in a new article, I use the SAVE AS feature and viola! I
have a new resource to promote my business.
Here is how it looks with the article inserted:
Don't Miss the Most Missed Point!
© 2003
Julie Jordan Scott
"Where do I start?" the woman asked, looking both open minded
and frazzled simultaneously. Included in the question was an
element of "please tell me everything is really truly going to be
ok."
The news is very, very good and the method is very, very easy
to implement.
Are you ready?
Applying this principle will bring you measurable, life changing
results. You don't want to miss it.
Here goes:
Starting today, step towards your goal from wherever you
are right now. That is your starting point.
Simplistic?
Yes.
And do people miss the point?
Yes! Far too often!
Here are concrete methods for shifting from missing the point to
reaching life changing results so that you can truly get the
end result you most desire.
1. Shifting a Limited Style of Thinking and Belief in Self:
Evidence of this behavior is birthed in how we speak to ourselves
and others. If we are perpetually using language filled with "can't"
or "impossible" or "never" or "always"….. words that are absolute in nature and broken or blocking in substance will consistently tear down rather than create.
Instead choose to speak from the place where one can experience what
Social Worker Sally Hansell says, "Buddha meets B.F. Skinner":
through using techniques such as being fully and completely in a moment by moment mode while observing, witnessing and standing in a place of
radical non judgment. The aim is to generate thinking which is
based in wisdom. In doing so, we learn to balance the power of emotional understanding and the strength of logical information from the intellect to take one into a more enlightened form of language in thought and word both to yourself and to others.
2. Shifting an Expectation of "Perfection"
There is a key distinction to draw here. According to Merriam
Webster, Perfectionism is a disposition to regard anything short of
perfection as unacceptable. Notice the words "short of " and "unacceptable". Perfectionistic tendencies tend to focus in on the WHAT IS WRONG of a situation rather than WHAT MAY ACTUALLY BE perfect.
Take a moment to grasp that concept.
The definition for Perfect is as follows: FLAWLESS and satisfying
all requirements. While looking at a particular instance in your life,
at first it may look hopelessly flawed and satisfying nothing and yet when you step away and look at the situation from the Buddha meets B.F.
Skinner model, you will all of a sudden be awakened to the flawlessness and satisfactory nature of the exact same circumstances. In doing so,
you become a Perfect Person.
The Perfectionist believes NOTHING is up to his or her standards.
Nearly everything is wrong to the perfectionist. Everything
is a hole, a gap, a what's missing.
The Perfect Person believes EVERYTHING is satisfying and flawless
and flowing its due course. While not everything is right to the
Perfect Person, everything is part of the journey and process of life…. and thus the starting point is readily available in the Next Step: the
Intentional Action.
3. Procrastination as a result of limited belief in self and
living in perfectionism.
Wayne Dyer said, "Procrastination is one of the most common and
deadliest
of diseases and its toll on success and happiness is heavy." In
simply taking that step towards your goal or dream, the universe will respond by saying "Yes!"
Today choose to start becoming your version of a perfect person.
Step into your goal or dream.
Don't miss the most missed point! Everything WILL be more than "ok"
it will be truly remarkable. Start now.
