Proofread a book : what to charge?

Hi all,

I've been a proofreader for years, documents, manuals, websites etc, and charge an hourly rate.

I've just been asked to quote on proofreading a book - approx 138,000 words (around 600 pages of a normal size book).

Any tips on where to get ideas for what to *quote* on this kind of project?

Do you know how fast you can proof read? Estimate high and tell them you are estimating high so that you don't surprise them with a higher price than what you quoted. Everyone is always happier when they have to pay less than they expected

My dad is a blacksmith so this is what he does. I am a mt student so I don't have to worry about charging anyone anything right now...and when I am done my course I wil be going through one of the online companies.

Hi,

Do a search on one or two of the major search engines and see what you find.

I found a website where the charges range from $0.01 per word to $0.04 per word depending on the service required.

If you do this it will give you some idea of the market rates are.

I've done a lot more research and now have a much better idea about how to charge for the manuascript proofreading.
