place article on my site 1st or submit 1st

when writing articles is it best to first include them on my site 1st, then submit them to article directories to optimize results for seo

Unless you are writing articles strictly for distribution and to get backlinks and traffic, then no.
If you are writing articles that you want on your website and also for distribution, let them stay on your site until you get crawled by at least 1-2 major search engines. If you post them on your site and distribute them at the same time, you run the risk of the engines seeing them as "duplicate content" on your site.
