Competition: How much is too much?

Hi everyone!

I have recently come across an interesting conundrum in my quest for online marketing success; and thought perhaps a number of us could benefit from a relevant discussion of it here.

In my attempts to search for niches amongst the larger markets, I am finding that even those keywords with several thousand or fewer searches a month already seem to have a number of established websites providing several types of content built around them. Often further attempts at narrowing the niche result in keyword searches which indicate a poor market; several hundred or fewer searches.

This leaves me wondering; are there better ways to find niche markets than through the simple use of keyword popularity? And also, at what point does the competition in a given niche become overwhelming for a new content website publisher?
