I use Paypal, and Neteller almost daily and have never had a problem with either. They are both free, minus their cut for each transaction.

I think PayPal's max is $2000 a day. As well thier rates are a little high.
If you are billing more than that, your need your own Merchant Account.
Actually having your own merchant account and billing system is the best
for your business, regardless.

I use Humbolt Bank . They were one of the first to
start dealing with folks like us that want to take payment on line. They are pretty liberal.

For the actual billing system, I use NetBilling .

This takes some set up but depending on your web development skill level.

Using these two, I have avoided the potential PayPal horror stories as
referred to above. However, it does take more work on your part to set up.

The real upside is you are in control of your billing.

Rates are great too.

I originally recommended PayPal in this thread, and while I have had great experiences with them myself - I use them with caution also. A client of mine lost many thousands when their account was closed without warning. For that reason, I transfer funds immediately - no matter the amount.

Thanks for the nightmare story Teli. That surely sucks, and thanks for looking out for others.

Oddly enough, today I went to open a 2nd banking account as well. I am a bit uneasy about how much I have used my banking numbers (automatic withdraws) with too many companies. I also keep just a minimal balance ( have had unauthorized withdraws) to cover my bare monthly costs. Everything left over I bury in the Pirate's Chest out back..........arggggggggggg matey!!!!!!!!!!!!.........
