You only need a business license if you are entering a profession that requires it. "Online Entrepreneur" (MLM, Affiliate, Direct Sales, Web Services, etc.) does not require a business license.

Are you perhaps talking about leagally establishing your business (Inc., LLC, Non-Profit)? If so, there is a lot of information out there. Example: . Or, you can consult a lawyer.

Or maybe you need to register your business locally? Jim is correct that your particular business does not need to be licensed but perhaps you want to register it as a DBA (Doing Business As) or obtain a Fictitous Name Certificate? If so, then you just need to call your county clerk's office or registrar (different counties have different reqirements).

You should also register with your state to pay taxes if applicable (sales; income).

I just want to get a DBA license so I can take advantage of those tax deductions at the end of the year.

You can still take advantage of the tax deductions (business expenses) as a sole proprietor without registering your business. That is how most online entrpreneurs work.

That's cool. I would rather be the sole proprietor and network with other online marketers than to have employees because the idea is to work from home. However, I would love to attend some offline seminars in the future.
