Since I do have a baby and a toddler, my work time is limited to sleep time anyways, so I make sure there are no distractions for me when I can work. Even if that means turning off the tv, unplugging the phone, and telling my husband to stay in his own office for a few hours.
Usually it works out ok.

LOL I do that too Loretta, then when they come barging into my CLOSED DOOR office, I motion to them like I'm, um - busy, and they quietly sneak back out. :P They just *assume* I was talking on the phone or listening to something. ;)

The problem with distractions that also exist at the outside workplace is:

You're still getting PAID.

Distractions while working at home...ummmm, not so much!

The main ways I deal with distractions;

- Use my natural rhythms. I'm a morning person so I get up early before everyone else and do an hour or so then when it's quiet. I don't see why this wouldn't work at the other end of the day if you're not a morning person. I'm useless in the afternoons so that's when I do brain numbing stuff like housework.

- Do jobs I dislike first and get them out of the way.

- Have a break every hour. I usually do something that takes me away from the computer like getting the mail, ironing something, putting the bins out, cleaning something up.

- I find having a list of what I want to achieve for the day and then ticking them off motivates me and keeps me focussed.

- If there are other people around, I'll take myself off into another room and shut the door.

I don't know that I agree that classical music is the only music that keeps you from being distracted - it would be put to sleep and would kill my motivation completely. Soothing: yes - motivating me to work: no.

So I often choose to listen to my favorite music when I need to get moving & get things done; when I find myself getting tired, or unfocused - I turn on my favorite tunes and that helps me. Might not work for everyone - but it does for me.

It depends on what I'm doing whether or not I can listen to music or not. If I do put music on, it's usually upbeat and sometimes pretty darn loud .... :p
