Credibility Issues - Whom to trust?

As I look at various affiliate marketing programs and sites and forums, I come away with some observations.

First, with so many affiliates promoting programs on how to make money as an affiliate, what keeps this whole thing from being one giant ponzi scheme?

Also, with so many affiliates for affiliate marketing programs, how do you know who to trust? How do I know whether or not they are promoting the product because it really is that good or because they are getting 50% of the sale? Is there a way to obtain credible reviews on programs from non-affiliates? Kind of a Consumer Reports for affiliate marketing/internet marketing?

Those are questions in the back of my mind. I am still working toward getting started but would also like some closure on the above questions if anyone has any thoughts.
