How To Avoid The Most Critical Mistake When JV Marketing...
By Joseph Ratliff

Stupid template emails.

It’s true, I hate them.

When you stop marketing from the heart to your market…you lose momentum, period.

I receive about 5 - 10 email requests a week to join forces with a marketer on some “exclusive money maker.”

Guess what? I turn 99% of them down. Why?

Well, it’s not because I am a total jerk, as a matter of fact I classify myself as “Mr. Nice Guy” when it comes to interacting with people. :)

Here’s why I personally turn most Joint Venture requests down…

Of every 20 requests received, approximately 7 - 10 are exactly the same email. Now don’t hold me to that, I have not yet tracked exact figures…but I know I am pretty close. There must be a template floating around somewhere on the internet.

And this bugs the hell out of me.

Why on earth does anyone think that lighting up their email account and sending a templated email to all the accomplished internet marketers is going to produce any Joint Ventures whatsoever?

It doesn’t work that way folks. Get over it.

Joint Ventures, which can be responsible for skyrocketing your own internet business, are not made by sending one, two, or even three emails…

Folks, this is all about creating and solidifying relationships.

Here is a rather edgy example: If some stranger from came up to you out of the blue and asked you to go on a date with them right that minute…would you drop everything in your life and do just that?

Come on now, be honest. :)

I would hope you would want to get to know that individual first, right?

Same thing applies to joint ventures…you cannot possibly expect anyone, guru or otherwise, to just drop their business for a total stranger who emailed them out of the blue, and requested that they promote that total stranger’s business for just a lousy commission. The sad thing is, this happens all the time in internet marketing.

There are a few things wrong with this approach:

* First, most marketers (gurus included) would actually want more out of the deal than just money. Personally, I am looking for a solid business relationship beyond the initial request. I am talking about the sharing of resources, talents, and contacts to further expand my business too. If I even get the slightest inkling that someone wants to email their product to my list once, and split the sales…CLICK! The delete key gets pressed immediately, or the phone gets hung up.

* Second, I have no clue who you really are at first. If I am going to give you access to my carefully developed list of marketing prospects, how can you expect to gain access to that list (or a guru’s list), if you have not made an attempt to build a relationship first?

* Third, Joint Venturing with someone takes time with everything else involved in running a business. That’s right, if you expect to send an email to a guru or anyone else on Monday, and expect them to perform the “simple” act of emailing by Friday, forget it. Doesn’t work that way.

* Fourth, do you even have a solid plan? What do you plan on doing if the guru says YES?… One or two emails sent to someone does not qualify as a plan, and most savvy marketers can smell that situation from a mile away. You need a well thought out front end, lead capturing, and back end marketing process in place and tested before approaching anyone with your “money maker” in the first place.

We are really just scratching the surface here with Joint Ventures. I hope you enjoyed the read…and look forward to much more on this lucrative subject.

I agree. I get a lot of these same emails in my inbox every day. It is hard enough to learn to trust someone online today. Building up a relationship takes time. I would actually be scared of anyone willing to jv with me from just a simple email message without any prior communications and getting to know me.

We all know JVs can help our business. But it does have to be done right with a plan.

Thank you Jeseph for the compliment. :)

I did have someone I was getting to know on another forum ask me to participate in a jv and I agreed. How do you protect yourself though? Do you still draw up contracts and fax them to be signed?
If there is money involved(monthly from a membership), should a joint acct be opened(is that possible with an american and canadian?), or do you just ask for proof of income incured through said membership?
I have a hard time completely trusting anyone, I'm afraid.
Do you have any advice on the best way to proceed?

First of all, there is a fine line with protecting your interests, and making it a "signing of a mortgage" for a potential JV partner...

How do you protect yourself though?

Joe: You really have to trust your gut. If someone wants to conduct a serious Joint Venture with you, they will open all lines of communication (phone, fax, email, websites etc...). If someone wants to start a JV with you, and refuses to open up those lines of communication...that would throw up a GIANT red flag for me.

Do you still draw up contracts and fax them to be signed?

Joe: Officially, I am not an attorney and wouldn't claim to provide any legal advice...so please seek that advice if necessary.

Now that is out of the way, I have done JV's both ways, with and without legal agreements (remember the fine line I mentioned above). Since money is involved, you may wish to form a simple agreement on paper, but once again...seek legal advice from a competent professional if you feel it necessary (I did when it came to money).

If there is money involved(monthly from a membership), should a joint acct be opened(is that possible with an american and canadian?), or do you just ask for proof of income incured through said membership?

Joe: Now I am a student of doing some things the hard way, so I simply asked to review sales reports, figured the agreed upon amount, and had it sent via check or Paypal. I am aware of automated methods out there though to handle this automatically (Like JV Manager). I am a handshake guy, so I like the personal and not automated contact. That's just me though.

I might be really dangerous if I got with the 22nd Century with ALL of my business practices huh? :D

I have a hard time completely trusting anyone, I'm afraid.

Joe: Well, you can definitely trust me, that's for sure (if that's any consolation). :) Keep in mind that 98% of all the people in this world are in fact honest and forthright, you just hear more about the ones that are dishonest through the media.

Do you have any advice on the best way to proceed?

Joe: My best advice when it comes to JV's, is to remember you are dealing with people of different types, and to listen to your gut. We all have that "inner voice" that will shout at you if things aren't going right. You just have to choose to listen to it. ;)

Thank you Joe. Good advice as always. My gut says take a chance, so that's what I'm gonna do.

Will keep you posted on the outcome. We are aiming to launch on the 15th of May(wow, in 3 days from now already?) We have been working on this now for almost a month. I just wanted to check with you to see before things actually progressed if I was missing anything. Would hate to think that come launch day, I missed something and everything blew up.

It is great to have the help of all the members on this site It has really helped me to build up my confidence in these matters.

Melanie,

Well, keep in mind that you cannot prepare for everything in business...because humans are involved. Too many variables :)

And...

No mistake you make in business (legally) will be so bad that you cannot rebound and learn from it, then move on.

I am interested in hearing how your JV adventure goes...

Send an email to joe@josephratliff.name any time.
