Staying Focused
This is one of the hardest things to do if you work online, why is this? I believe it is because we work from our computers it is all too easy to wander away in a tangent. Our thoughts quite often wander away from the job at hand, thinking that is alright because we work for ourselves. The affect this has on our online business can be very damaging, and then we wonder why productivity is not up too par. What can we do about this if it is happening to us? First of all we need to realize that we are running an online business, it is not just a hobby. If we were in the real world would we be like this? I think not. Just because we work in a virtual world there is little difference from actually running a business in the offline world.
First thing we must do is make a commitment to making our online business a success, after all that is what we doing this for. Staying focused is part of this commitment we must make if we are to see the fruits of our labour. Often we put a great deal of time into being a success online, lets not throw it away by being half hearted. There are a few things we can do to stay on track, the first thing would be to set realistic goals for what we plan to accomplish. Write out a mission statement and put it up near your computer so that it will remind you each day what you are here for. Make a list of things to accomplish each day, perhaps make it out before you log off after your work day even if your day is not very long. The next day you will be equipped to tackle what needs to be done.
If you are working on a project, make sure you finish it before starting a new one. Many are what I call grasshopper minds, starting a project but going cold on it before it is finished. These people are full of ideas, but can not stay focused long enough to finish it before they have another sure fire idea. What happens is these people have unfinished projects all over there computers. Their on line business starts to suffer and eventually they give up, saying the internet is not the place to run a business. They are very quick to blame the internet for their failure instead of committing themselves to finishing one project, before researching a new one. I believe this can easily happen, if we don’t have a goal to work towards and a clear mission statement where we can see it everyday.
The steps I have outlined here are not rocket science; they are just common sense if you want to be a success online. It does not take that long to prepare an achievable goal and mission statement. Too may people just fire away thinking they are going to make it big online, they seldom do because they lack focus and the right commitment to being a success. Don’t be like the losers, make it work for you and if you have the right motivation you will be a success in whatever you do online.
