Do not use the meta keywords tag. Many people still think of this as a quick fix for SEO. It's not, It only benefits your competition!! how so? well back then search engines used to rely on Meta Keywords to guess which keywords were relevant to a webpage , now the search engines are sophisticated enought to examine the keywords in the body of a webpage.
by placing Meta Tags on a page your giving your competitor a list of important keywords.can then use these keywords and buy PPC ads or optimize their own site for your important keywords. Why give them this sort of business intelligence? Having invested time and money on exhaustive keyword research to identify the important keyword phrases to use for your own SEO and PPC efforts, why on earth would you make a list of your high value keywords public?

Very interesting concept. I've actually heard this theory before. I too would be interested in hearing from other SEO folks on this: do you think putting in the keywords META is actually giving your competition your keywords? Could they find them anyway?

Thanks for the article trentton!

I would also be interested to hear about this. Usually these days people seem to advise you not worry about the meta so much.

Considering there are numerous tools available to easily discover keywords within a site, I'm more concerned about using every opportunity to get my site ranked on all search engines, over making my keywords public in meta tags.
True, Google does use title, headers, content etc. over meta tags to determine a pages relevance in a search, but they are still used for display on SERPs.
Yahoo states in their own information that to rank properly on their SERP's, you should use meta name, description and keyword tags, so they do carry some relevance there.
Although 90%+ of searches probably come from Google, wouldn't you agree that true SEO should involve all search engines to maximize traffic?

Well regardless of the meta keywords tag, one should absolutely use the meta description tag. Without the description tag, the search engines will just pull the first few lines from the page for the search engine description, and that may or may not accurately describe the content. I would rather control that with the meta description tag.
