Will google penalize you for linking to non related sites?

Postby kannuta » Mon Mar 09, 2009 7:46 am

I've heard different opinions on this subject. I swap links with any website as long as I feel my type of customer visits those sites and if it will bring me business. Am I wrong for thinking this way? Will google penalize me in the rankings for some of these non related sites?

I'm not sure if you'll be penalized for it but I wonder why you would want to exchange links with a website that has nothing to do with your target market? I have heard link exchanges are not that great anyway but I'm still new to all this linking stuff so I could be way off base.

Pretty much the only time I'm linking to other sites that are not in my niche is when I comment on blogs in various niches that I read but I don't comment just to get my link there.

Great topic for discussion.

I agree with Angie: the purpose of backlinking should be to get relevant backlinks from sites related to yours. That's building an interconnected web of sites that relate to one another.

The truth is no one but Google really knows what Google will or won't penalize you for. They make it up as they go along ;) But, I agree with Angie, the goal is to link with like minded websites.

Of course a small handful off topic links aren't going to drag you down. But, I would try to keep them minimal.

If the site you're linking to is targeting the type of customer you are looking for, then I don't think I would call it unrelated.... could you give us an example of what you're looking at?

Google doesn't do anything about this. If your readers will come from those sites, that is already an additional asset for you. Google PR is not only a result of the backlinks that you have but for the traffic that your sites has.

Linking to these sites are good. (period)

Getting any backlinks to your site will definately help your rankings and traffic. It is a matter of how quickly you get the backlinks to your site.

It is best to be consistent in your marketing weekly and not try to get all the links you can as fast as you can.

Make sure you link to sites that have a pagerank of 1 or more.
