If Google penalizes duplicate content...

Won't submitting articles to article directories penalize your own site? (assuming you have your articles posted on your site)

How does this work?

And what's the benefit of writing your own articles for your site when you can just take a "free article" and use that?

Duplicate content that attracts Google is code for code, line for line, photo for photo. A nearly exact duplicate of another site.

Using articles on your site, whether PLR or ones from sources such as Article City, etc will not get you a Google ding.

If it did, where would all article depositories be?

That being said, I would highly recommend PLR articles over the ones on the depository sites. You can do just about anything you want with PLR stuff. ;)

Duplicate content isn't one of those 'cut and dry' things. I think there are times when it can hurt but I think we worry way too much about it.

Here's what I learned about it with one of my sites...

actually, PLR and MRR stuff is some of the worst for duplicate content. there are so many copies of it around.

you have to rewrite anything that you did not write yourself. Not just for duplicate content worries, but just so it will work better for you.

also, duplicate content is not really that big of a deal to google. If you are concerned about it , do some research including at google.

Usually when I do article submission, I do not submit articles that I have published on my own site. the idea of article submission is to submit the articles to the article sites in order to entice people to come back to your site to buy a product or service you are offering. It can also help with Google PR, since it provides viable back links.

As for it penalizing you if you were to post it on your site as well. I don't think it would hurt all that much. Most likely as long as your site has a ok PR to begin with, Google will view the submitted articles as the dup content, and not the article on your site. The very worse that will happen is that the one page on your site with the article won't rank high. It should not affect the rest of your site.
