This means that the sitemap is simply meant for human and must be readable. This sitemap can come in different extension : .html, .htm, . php, .aspx and etc. But the important point to take note is to put a link to your sitemap from the website's homepage. Sitemap is meant for Page Rank distribution. Still don't understand?

As you can see, most of the websites SEO their homepage as the most important page to appear in SERPS as well as major links. This is based on the fact that Homepage is a top-level domain and by performing such method, a homepage naturally has the highest Page Rank as compared to other pages in the domain. Creating a sitemap is to distibute the PR of a homepage to other pages in the website, in order to increase the PR of every webpages.

Sitemap For Search Engines
People tends to make the common mistake of creating the above sitemap for the search engines. This is why i mentioned above that sitemap must be created for human eyes because there is another type of sitemap meant for search engines and it is in .xml extension. Now we have two type of sitemaps : Sitemap.html and Sitemap.xml

This extension of sitemap is written using XML scripting and it is used for search engines to index your website properly the next time they make a visit.

Personally, I also use the sitemap of several websites to help me get my way around their pages - especially if they have a lot of sub-sections, pages, etc.

IMO, it is not just for SE bots use but for the visitors as well.
