Keyword Research: How Many Searches Is Enough?

Postby Lynn Terry » Sat Sep 15, 2007 4:02 pm

It is one of the most common questions when it comes to researching keywords, and is the one thing that stumps most people who are researching potential niches for online business ventures.

I recently put together a report as an exclusive bonus to those who get my Easy Niche Research subscription. It is not available anywhere else online. To give you a taste of what this report is all about...

There are a lot of free tools that will tell you how many searches a keyword or keyword phrase gets every day across the major search engines.

You start out by typing a general word or idea into your keyword research tool...

You might see keyword phrases that get 100 searches a day, 1,000 searches a day, or 10,000 searches a day.

Most people get stuck here, scratch their head, and ask "What is it I'm looking for, exactly? Big numbers, little numbers... What's the magic number?"

If this sounds like you, or you could use a few secrets from a seasoned expert on locating hot new niches to tap into... download this report:

The best keyword research tool, in my opinion, is your brain. Think like a potential customer of yours and how they would be searching online. Once you have come up with a list of keywords, test them out. That is the only way to know if keywords really work or not.

Keyword Research Secrets

Its good to use a number of keywords research tools which gives me a 3 dimensional view of a niche. Potential traffic is only a part of the equation, even the number of competing websites can throw you off.

You can have a large number of websites in a niche yet still easily get a top first page position in record time. It really depends how established and optimized the sites are in your niche.

Alternatively you can have few websites in your niche but if they are well established and highly optimized you could find it extremely hard obtaining a favourable SERP.

I have a somewhat loose system where I use around 4 to 5 tools to give me an idea of the best keywords based on traffic and competition. Then I research some sites that rank well for all keywords and check a number of things.

SEO, number of backlinks, quality of content to name but a few.

I guess you could say traffic is not the only thing to consider. Number of sites in your niche, the proportion of sites that are highly optimized and how established the top five sites are for all the keywords targeted.

After performing this process over and over, I eventually got a feel if a niche is 'soft' and ripe for the picking.

Silvrsentinel: Great info! I keep forgetting how to find out how many back links sites have. Can you you explain how that works again?

Checking backlinks

Postby silvrsentinel » Sun May 17, 2009 8:00 pm

You just go to Google and type

Of course you type your own personal domain in place of 'your domain'.

I also this site

Keep in mind that results are not exactly accurate but can be used as a guide to see how much backlinking you will need to obtain top Google positions for your keywords. Also it depends on your on page SEO and quality of backlinks as to how much backlinking will be necessary.

Hope I have helped!

I learned that each keyword phrase should be getting a least 500 searches a day to get enough traffic to make sales once you get to the first page of google. You should really strive to get into the top 5 as well.
