Hi Jason,
I think that Dream Stealers when we're talking about MLM's is a combination of two different things.
1) Media influence.
When was the last time there was massive media coverage of successful and legal MLM's?
And how many times have scams, pyramid companies and ponzi schemes been exposed in the media?
For someone not involved in MLM it builds a picture of what you must act like to work with MLM.
2) They care about you
When you care about someone and they suddenly get involved in MLM's you will do anything to 'educate' them about the pitfalls and illegality of MLM to keep them from becoming 'victims' or getting 'exposed' in a nation-wide media craze.
Another reason could be that in order for them to acknowledge the 'new you' they must mentally discard their picture of your 'old you' - which includes all the positive thing about you that they have come to love.
Sincerely,
Henrik Flensborg
